Crown and Bridge Therapy

If you have damaged or missing teeth, you can benefit from dental crowns or bridges to improve the your appearance or chewing function.

Crowns are dental restorations otherwise known as "caps" made of natural looking porcelain that fit and replaces the entire part of a decayed tooth above the gum line. It encases the tooth and becomes the tooth's new outer surface.

Crowns may be necessary because of broken down old fillings, fractured, chipped or sensitive teeth. Crowns serve the dual purpose of strengthening a badly decayed tooth and it also provides a durable solution for the appearance of these teeth.

Like in bridges, except that there are no missing teeth in this case, teeth to be crowned are trimmed down or built up to the appropriate size and shape. A "cap" which looks just like the natural tooth is then cemented onto the preparation.

A "bridge" is a restoration, which replaces or spans the space where one or more teeth have been lost. There are two types of bridges: fixed and removable. Fixed bridges are cemented into place and can only be removed by a dentist. The patient for cleaning can take out a removable bridge or “partial denture. While removable bridges are economical they may not be as desirable as fixed bridges and are not stable.

A bridge helps maintain the natural shape of your face by supporting your lips and cheeks. Bridges can be made to attach to your own remaining permanent teeth as well as to dental implants. They can be made of gold or porcelain tooth-colored materials, and with proper home care and regular dental examinations to monitor fit and support, your bridge should last for many years.
